Anxiety and Stress

How to deal with Anxiety and Stress

Shining a light on mental health helps reduce the stigma that keeps many people from seeking support. Everyone worries from time to time. If the worry isn't getting in the way of your life most of the time, then it's probably not a problem for you. If you feel like you worry most of the time, and the worry is about a variety of things in life, it's possible you could have Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

If you have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, turning off the worry part of your brain has probably seemed to be pretty much impossible.  This is not your fault and it's not due to you simply "not trying hard enough." Whether your anxiety has been a long-term part of your life or a shorter-term problem, counseling can help. I can help you find better ways to react to those anxious thoughts and feelings.

One small Step

Many different types of therapy are used to treat anxiety. One well-known modality is cognitive behavioral therapy. CBT is widely used because it has been studied so extensively. It is a good method to use because it produces clear, measurable changes in thoughts and behaviors and you get to see quick results. There are other issues that are closely related to anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, which involves intrusive thoughts and urges and post traumatic stress disorder, which happens when people have a prolonged stress response. These are just some of the various anxiety disorders. These concerns can present in many ways and can make it even harder to know if what you’re experiencing is anxiety. If anxiety interferes with your daily life - whatever that might look like for you; that's reason enough to see a licensed mental health counselor.

Fears into Action

Many adults over 60 are dealing with anxiety and fears related to getting older. Some are worried about losing a spouse or what will happen to their parents as they reach their 80s or 90s. If one of your fears are, what would happen to me financially if my partner passed away – work with your spouse to build a plan. While you don’t know every aspect of your future, you can prepare at best.

As with worries about the future, the important thing here is to breathe yourself back into the present. The past is gone and there is nothing that we can do to change it. Focus on what you can do in the here and now. Stress is an inevitable part of life. We can’t choose to avoid it. We can only choose how to deal with it when it occurs. Don’t worry about the future or dwell on the past. Learn to live in the present. Love and forgive yourself. Your heart and mind can help you to solve your anxiety, given the space to think, feel and dream.

 Eye Movement Therapy

EMDR therapy takes a different approach from that of talk therapy. Eye movement therapy helps to take the power away from negative beliefs, showing you that they are merely an interpretation of an event. Learn how more valid and positive interpretations are available. In the initial session Dr. Gayle will assess if EMDR is suitable for your presenting issues and if so, will talk to you in more detail about the therapy.

Special Offer - 3 sessions (approximately 5 hours)  Reduced from $520 to $460 until November 20, 2018
